The work draws on Thomas Rowlandson's etching of a woman entering the sea around 1800 beneath the shelter of a bathing machine. In the original print, the bathing machine operates as an instrument of social control. Here, it has been removed. What remains is the movement itself, the leap.
Made from ripstop nylon, the work employs overlapping layers of blue and pink, transparency, and light as pictorial material. Its chromatic qualities shift with the changing position of the sun, while the wind sets the surface into continuous motion. The leap is not presented as a completed action. The figure appears to hover, to fall, and to leap at the same time.
