Excerpt:
STRANO, BIZZARO. ANOMALO is a one-shot video work in which the artist explores emotion through performance rather than mere representation. Dressed as a clown, with make-up inspired by Gelsomina from Federico Fellini’s La Strada, the artist performs a series of exaggerated expressions and gestures behind layers of fabric.
The fabrics used in the work were collected at the market in Pistoia, where the artist had a residency. They form three distinct layers: the fabric held directly towards the camera, the fabric worn as clothing, and the white fabric in the background, transforming the space into a stage. By moving and revealing the fabrics, the artist repeatedly appears and disappears, confronting the camera with different emotions and grimaces. Excerpts from Tom Lutz’s writings on crying accompany the performance.
The clown becomes a figure through which emotion can shift between the absurd, the uncanny, the frightening, and the exaggerated.
